Gas Street to Major's Green, Stratford Canal (9 miles, 1 lock)

The last minute decision to leave Gas Street yesterday, saw us ploughed into a lovely storm all the way to King's Norton Junction, where we moored for the night.  The waterproofs were very welcome!

The old Toll House at the junction opposite our mooring, still with the charges on the wall for the work boats.

Richard spotted this heron trying to blend into his surroundings by being really still, good try!

....and look at this squirrel hiding in the tree, not very successfully either!

Always a good haul when Richard goes down the weed hatch!

As we set off this morning, the old guillotine lock at bridge one, covered in the usual graffiti, sacrilege!

Unfortunately, as I started to use the rudder, I discovered that it had broken the bottom hinge, leaving it wiggling uselessly!  We moored up after the lock and had a good look at the damage.  Richard took the rudder off the top hinge and tied rope through the bottom one, reattached the rudder and threaded a ratchet strap through the rope to keep the lower rudder under control.

Luckily straight lines are ok, as I was pulled through Brandwood tunnel.

A beautiful canal, but no one around for miles, not even a jogger!

Our friend Reg built this boat http://www.littleboatco.co.uk/ so we sent him some piccys!

We moored up at the visitor moorings at Major's Green, where there is a lift bridge operated by a BW key, so that will be fun in the morning!  Tomorrow we need to find a hardware shop for new hinges for the rudder!
