Braunston to Hawkesbury Junction (23 miles, 4 locks)

We have had a busy week of travelling in our efforts to get to the Norbury Festival 2015 on the weekend of 1st - 4th May.  We calculated on 130 miles and 59 locks from Foxton.  We resume our journey at Braunston....

Braunston Marina ~ historic boatyard still in it's intended use

Beautiful calves leaving Braunston

Rugby ~ a great stopover for supplies

We were soon in Rugby and stopped to get some shopping done.  Luckily, a good friend was already moored there and had his car.  He offered us a lift to Aldi and we walked back.  The temperature had risen so we decided to stay the night there.

Newbold Tunnel ~ a piddly 250 yards long!

Next morning, our intention was to get through Sutton Stop (junction of the Oxford and Coventry Canals) and moor at the junction overnight.

Fantastic scenery

This bend approaching Sutton Stop is usually really busy, but then it is early in the year

Approaching Hawkesbury Junction (Sutton Stop) ~ traditional rendezvous for boat people

We got through the stop lock (where tolls were taken from passing boats) and negotiated the U bend to bring us onto the Coventry Canal.

(photo Wikipedia)  Standing on the bridge, our turning is clear as we come through the lock on the right, under the bridge and back through the narrow left entrance onto the Coventry Canal.  This will take us to Nuneaton and beyond to Tamworth and Fradley Junction.

As planned we moored overnight beyond the junction, getting more little jobs done on the boats, as is our usual pursuit before a big show......
